Frequently Asked Questions

Your Investment Portfolio

How do I get started?
Stash makes it easy to invest in what matters to you, based on your interests, beliefs and goals.  All you need to get started is 2 minutes, $5 and a phone.  To get started, download the Stash app, go through the signup process, choose your first investment from the short list Stash recommends for you, and link your bank account.
What am I investing in?
Investments on Stash are Exchange Traded Funds ("ETFs") or stocks.  Stash picks a select group of the thousands of ETFs and stocks available, based on factors like low fees, managed risk, and historical performance.  Stash recommends a set of those investments for you, based on the profile you fill out when you sign up.  For each investment available to you on Stash, you can see the primary company or companies included, and you can visit the website of the investment for more information.
How do I add funds to my investment portfolio?
You may add money by entering the desired amount on the Deposit screen.  There are no fees to deposit money.  The money will transfer from your linked bank account that must be owned by you.   Note: These transactions will appear on your bank statement as Stash ACH.
Is there risk involved in my investment?
Yes. All investments carry risk. Investments can be volatile and can involve the loss of your original deposit. Also, please keep in mind that past investment performance is no guarantee of future performance.
How do I change my risk level?
Stash does not allow you to override your risk level. Our risk assessment tool is designed to help you make the appropriate investments for your financial situation. Our mission is to help people save and invest for the long term and that means helping you choose investments best suited for you. However, we understand that life happens and situations change. As such, you can go into the app and revise your suitability questions.
Why is my risk level different from the risk tolerance I chose?
Risk level is determined by a combination of factors. Choosing your risk tolerance helps determine your risk level, but we also must take into account your financial situation, age, and a variety of other factors.
Is the money invested in my Stash Account protected?
Your investments with Stash are protected against financial institution failure by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC).  All holdings and cash are held at APEX Clearing Corp.  For more information on SIPC insurance, please visit www.sipc.org.
Can I purchase individual stocks?
Most of the investments currently on Stash are Exchange Traded Funds ("ETFs"), selected, based on factors like low fees, managed risk, and historical performance.  Because ETFs can provide exposure to many different underlying companies, they can provide better diversification than many individual stocks, and work well as building blocks of a portfolio.  Stash may add other investments over time.
Can I earn dividends from my Stash account?
Yes!  Depending on your choice of investments, you may receive dividends.  Your dividends are automatically received as cash and go into your free cash balance.  View your dividends on the "History" screen under processed transactions.  We will email you when you receive dividends.
How often do I earn dividends?
Please visit the individual investment websites to see the dividends distribution schedule.  These can normally be found by clicking on Distributions in any of the fund websites.
